If you’re eager to connect your smartphone to your new TV wirelessly and are unsure how to do it, I’ll show you how.

Quick Summary: In the case of Apple, you can easily connect an Android smartphone to your TV if both support Miracast or Airplay. Confirm the phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. On Android, allow screen mirroring on the TV and enable the same on the smartphone. On iOS, click the Airplay icon and select the TV to connect with. Otherwise, Android users can use Chromecast or AirDroid instead.

I’ve described the steps for five different scenarios.

Connecting a Phone to a TV Wirelessly

How to connect your phone to your TV wirelessly depends on your device type and the operating systems running on them. But, generally, the procedure is as follows:

  1. Confirm the phone and TV are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open an app that supports mirroring (see the table below).
  3. Select ‘Cast,’ ‘Cast screen,’ or ‘Cast my screen’ on the app.

The process will also differ noticeably according to whether the smartphone runs on Android, iPhone, or other; and whether the TV is a standard HDTV, smart TV, or some other type. An Android smartphone can only connect to a TV if it runs Android 4.2 or greater, using the Miracast wireless display standard, and Apple’s smartphones connect using Airplay.

The two devices (phone and TV) must also be compatible with each other for the wireless connection to be possible.

Connecting an Android Smartphone to a TV

The Android smartphone will likely have Miracast, but the smart TV may or may not.

So, we’ll consider two scenarios: where both have Miracast and if only the phone has it. Additionally, I’ve described a method using Chromecast and AirDroid, which are alternative options for screen mirroring.

The Phone and TV have Miracast

Connecting two Miracast-supporting devices wirelessly is easy. Follow these steps:

  1. Ensure the phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Set the TV by enabling or allowing “screen mirroring.”
  3. Set the Android phone by turning on screen mirroring under the wireless settings.
  4. Select the TV from the list of devices on the Android phone.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup. Usually, you must enter a code on the phone displayed on the TV.

Only the Phone has Miracast (The TV Doesn’t)

You can still connect an Android smartphone with a TV that doesn’t have Miracast, but you will need to use a wireless display adapter.

It’s usually necessary for a standard HDTV rather than a smart TV, but check the TV’s box or manual for whether it supports Miracast.

  1. Plug the adapter into the TV’s HDMI port to act as a receiver for the smartphone. It must also be plugged into a power source.
  2. Turn on screen mirroring on the Android phone under the display settings.
  3. Pair the two devices by following the on-screen instructions, which will differ depending on the manufacturer and wireless adapter used.

Using Chromecast

You can use Chromecast to plug into the HDMI port to broadcast the phone’s content wirelessly. Follow these steps:

  1. Ensure the phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Connect the Chromecast to the TV’s HDMI port.
  3. Launch the app to cast on the phone.
  4. Section the option from within the app to cast. Look for a small rectangle with a Wi-Fi symbol in the corner.
  5. Select the Chromecast device from the list of available devices.

The TV should begin to play the content.

Using AirDroid Cast

Follow these steps to connect a phone to a TV wirelessly using AirDroid:

  1. Download and install the AirDroid Cast app.
  2. Open the AirDroid Cast website on the TV at webcast.aridroid.com.
  3. Enter the code shown on the screen (or scan it) on the phone.

AirDroid Cast will capture and display the smartphone’s screen on the larger TV screen.

Connecting an Apple iPhone to a TV

Apple smartphones use Airplay to connect wirelessly.

An Airplay-enabled iPhone is best used with an Apple TV. The two will be completely compatible. This is all you have to do:

  1. Ensure the phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Launch the app to cast.
  3. Look within the app for the Airplay icon.
  4. Select the Apple TV from the list of available devices.

The TV should begin to play the content immediately.

FAQ

Does the phone have to be near or pointing at the TV for the wireless connection to work?

No, it doesn’t. Since it’s a Wi-Fi-based connection and not Infrared, the phone and TV only have to be within the Wi-Fi range of the router.

So, you can probably connect the two even if the phone is in another room, at the other end of the house, or outside, as long as the Wi-Fi signal is good.
